How Our Youth Workshops Are Changing Lives

Young people in Rwanda are increasingly gaining access to accurate information and practical tools to make safer decisions through youth-centered harm reduction workshops organized by the Harm2Heal Initiative.

We recently hosted an interactive session at the University of Rwanda, Huye Campus, bringing together students to learn about evidence-based harm reduction strategies and how they can protect their health and well-being. The workshop aimed to create an open and safe space where students could discuss sensitive issues, ask questions, and better understand the risks associated with substance use and other health challenges affecting youth.

During the session, we shared practical knowledge on reducing risks, promoting safer choices, and challenging stigma around people who use drugs. Participants also discussed the importance of peer education and how students can support one another through awareness and responsible decision-making. By focusing on evidence rather than judgment, the workshop encouraged constructive dialogue and empowered students to think critically about health and safety.

We emphasised that youth education is one of the most powerful tools in preventing harm. According to the Harm2Heal Initiative, equipping young people with reliable information helps them make informed decisions and contribute to healthier communities. We noted that when young people understand the risks and the available strategies to reduce them, they become agents of change among their peers.

80 Students who attended the session described the workshop as informative and impactful. Many said it helped them better understand harm reduction and the role they can play in promoting safer behaviors on campus and within their communities.

Through initiatives like this, the Harm2Heal Initiative aims to expand youth engagement across universities and communities in Rwanda. By continuing to educate youth and encourage open conversations, we hope to reduce risks, break stigma, and empower a new generation to make healthier and more informed choices.
