What Can Happen When Youth Shape the Conversation on Harm Reduction?

Last week, the Harm2Heal Initiative successfully hosted a brainstorming session that brought together 54 young people to discuss evidence-based harm reduction strategies. The event, held in a participatory and interactive format, focused on translating global harm reduction principles into practical, community-driven actions.

The session aimed to move beyond theory. Participants explored what safer practices look like in real life, how stigma prevents people from seeking help, the importance of youth-led initiatives, and how small, informed actions can save lives.

“This session allowed us to share experiences, challenge misconceptions, and design solutions that we can implement immediately in our communities,” said Mukamisha Irene, a participant.

The event was designed not only to educate but to empower youth to lead change. By connecting participants with evidence-based resources, including guidance from the World Health Organization and Harm Reduction International, the session underscored the real-world impact of harm reduction strategies.

Experts say that engaging youth in harm reduction initiatives is critical for effective public health interventions. According to UNAIDS, youth-led strategies help reduce barriers to care and improve adoption of safer practices.

We concluded the session by emphasising that meaningful harm reduction starts with informed, engaged communities. By giving young people the tools, knowledge, and platform to act, the initiative is fostering a new generation of leaders dedicated to safer, healthier communities.
